The Humbug Spires Primitive Area is a non-motorized area popular for rock climbing. Impressive outcroppings of quartz monzonite, part of the Boulder Batholith, rise 300 to 600 feet and provide outstanding climbing opportunities, most of which range from 5.5 to 5.7 in difficulty, although routes to challenge all levels of ability are present. The main trail extends up Moose Creek into the rock spires. Trailhead facilities; backpacking or day hiking trips on foot or horseback; wildlife viewing and fishing. When hiking in Humbug Spires, carry water, a compass and a copy of the site map. Camping is primitive with no designated campsites, a parking area and toilet are provided at the access point. Proximity camping for RVs available at the Divide Bridge Campground on the Big Hole River five miles away. The three-mile trail at the parking area and winds along the creek through an old growth forest.

Driving Directions

To reach the Humbug Spires Primitive Area take Interstate 90 west from Butte to I-15. Take I-15 south to the Moose Creek exit, then travel east on the improved gravel road for 3.5 miles to the Moose Creek trailhead.
