St. Lawrence O'Toole Church

In 1897, the Lawrence O'Toole Church was built from donations of miners and families living on the Butte Hill at a cost of $25,000.

The altar rail Is of marble and brass, and the stations of the cross are the originals. The 3 front altars are all hand carved, and the confessionals are oak. In 1906, Mr. Tolston, a European artist, painted forty frescoes on the ceiling and did paintings on the walls and elsewhere in the sanctuary.

In June of 1987 the church was given to the city of Walkerville after a small group of citizens worked to save it from destruction. The church no longer provides Sunday services, but is reserved for weddings and is open for public viewing from the first of June through August on Fridays and Sundays from noon till 5:00pm

The church is very popular for weddings, booked months in advance by couples. Wedding reservations are taken by Kathy Rosa at 782-2724. Admission is free, donations are welcome.
