Jefferson City was a stop along the Fort Benton and Virginia City stage line which quickly grew into a settlement. It took its name when Jefferson County was named one of Montana Territory's original counties on February 2, 1865. Area mines produced millions of dollars worth of silver and gold during the late 1800s. A large open-pit mine has produced gold for the Montana Tunnels Project since the late 1990s.(Copyright 2009, Montana Historical Society: Montana Place Names from Alzada to Zortman, Montana Historical Society Research Center Staff)
